

To talk about the science side of it, here is how thoughts are normally generated: I think science and Buddhism converge fairly well, in fact I find it thrilling how science is coming to some of the same conclusions. Even without this, however, some are accessible enough to be encounter-able and chantable without this, like Avalokiteshvara and Tara, since we can all experience compassion and kindness. In a tantric context this is why lineage, empowerment etc becomes important - the freedom of that being must be concrete to you from having actually seen it, not just abstract or theoretical.

Not only are you chanting, say, “may beings be free” in the abstract, you are going even further and chanting the equivalent of “This being is already completely free. In the case of a mantra being that of a specific awakened being, this becomes very powerful. When we chant mantras we are cutting off our habit of constantly ruminating on and reinforcing negative samsaric patterns, and instead reinforcing, accumulating, and cultivating patterns that lead us to waking up. They are patterns of speech which represent pure, non-samsaric aspirations. This is the cause of samsara, the effect of which is suffering. We constantly reinforce and cling to the same negative, self-destructive patterns.
